The twelfth season of the tengaged version of The X Factor was announced on June 7, 2020 at the season finale of The X Factor 11, where it was also announced that all four judges would also be returning to the panel. Contestants applications for this season opened on July 11. The season premiered on July 16, 2020.
Tommy returned for his twelfth season, Nehemiah for his eighth, Jack for his third and Michael for his second. This season marked the first season all four judges remained on the panel since Season Six.
This season remained largely unchanged from the previous season. It has been reported that the lifeline vote that featured in the past two seasons will not feature this season. Instead, each judge will now have an additional steal in The Showcases. This would mean their would be a Top 16 in the live shows for the first time since Season Eight. This meant that there would be two additional live shows this season.
Selection Process[]
The applications for the twelfth season of The X Factor opened on Saturday 11 July, 2020. It has been stated that the auditions round will remain the same as seasons past. Each hopeful had to receive a majority 3 or 4 'YES' votes from the judges to make it through to the next stage of the competition: The Judges' Judgement.

The Judgement[]
52 acts made it through the auditions to the judgement, the judges reviewed the auditions once more to determine which acts would join which team and which four acts would be eliminated from the competition. They will then rank the Top 52 in order of who they want on their own teams individually. Each team will have 12 artists this season, sticking with the same numbers as last season.
The order was randomized as followed: Nehemiah, Jack, Michael and Tommy. The picking order was reversed back and forth through rounds.

The Showcases[]
The Showcases started airing on July 27 and aired for two consecutive nights. At this stage of the competition, each artist performed for the judges, however it was the decision of their mentor on which three acts from their team made it to the live Quarter-Finals. This season instead of the return of the Lifeline Vote, each judge had the oppurtunity steal one of the eliminated acts from the other judges teams and bring them to the Live Shows. Making the Live Shows a Top 16 this season.
Before the first night of performances, Diana Rouvas and EXIT pulled themselves from the competition. Both were on Michael's team.

Live shows[]
Sixteen acts made it through to the live shows to compete to become the twelfth singing sensation of The X Factor. Each judge picked three acts from their showcase team to represent them in the live shows. They stole a fourth act from amgonst eliminated artists on other the judges teams.

Week 1: Top 16 (July 31 & August 1)[]
In the first live-shows, the Top 16 performed for the judges who awarded points to each artist on two different nights based on their team. At the end of each night, each judge was able to save one of their own acts by awarding them with a 'fast pass' to the quarter-finals. The next highest ranked artist on each team that night will also then be saved. At the end of two nights there would be 8 acts remaining. Where four of these 8 will be eliminated next week.

Week 5: Season Finale (August 8th)[]
In the Season Finale, the Top 4 performed for the judges who awarded points to each artist. They first had to each perform a new song and then their song of the season, the act in fourth place was then eliminated. The remaining three acts went on to sing their potential winning singles with their points from the previous two rounds carried over.
